Bulk Flow Analyst (BFA) is a 3D Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulation tool for designing and troubleshooting bulk material handling systems. Co-developed by Overland Conveyor Company, Inc. and Applied DEM, Inc., BFA enables engineers to visualize how particles—such as coal, ore, and grain—move through chutes, hoppers, feeders, and conveyor transfer points. By combining realistic material properties and particle size distributions with detailed 3D geometry from common CAD tools, BFA predicts flow patterns, belt loading, impact forces, buildup zones, spillage, and wear hot spots. Engineers use these insights to optimize geometry and operating conditions, improving throughput while reducing dust, material degradation, and maintenance. Results can be reviewed as animations, color maps, and quantitative plots to support design reviews and decision-making.
